Brendan Sidaway – Update
To everyone back in Barbados wondering how I am doing, here is an update:
When I first came up to join the team in pre-season training, the sessions went well. I was doing one of the best in the fitness tests and doing well with the technical side.
After only two sessions with the full team there, the season started. First game was against Watford. We played fairly average and were unlucky to lose.
The next game was against Birmingham who were top of the league at the time. The coaching staff allowed each player on the team a game to miss so they can rest and recover. That game was supposed to be my missed game but the coach sent me a text that morning saying it would be a difficult game and they may need me to help out and play. Therefore he wanted me to come sit on the bench in case.
At half time and after a terrible half on our part, the score was 3-0 to Birmingham. I was brought on a few minutes into the second half. The last thing my coach said to me before I went on was “we need that energy out of you Brendan, you have done well in all the fitness sessions so let me see it”. I was buzzing around the pitch trying to offer my support in every situation and get the ball every time we had possession. The game had changed, we were no longer playing defensive but getting chances and keeping them in their half. Unfortunately, after all our chances and possession they managed to get one attack and score to make it 4-0. I decided to take it upon myself to leave my defensive midfield position on the field when we had the ball and get forward. With about 15 minutes left, I made a tackle in the middle of the pitch and played it to the right winger. I ran all the way forward and was in line with the striker. The winger cut in toward me and I screamed for it. He played me the ball and I faked to go to the right but let the ball keep rolling left which sent the defender sliding on the ground, I was in on goal with a player coming at me fast so I made the quick decision to hit it near post and aim high. On my weaker left foot from the edge of the box I hit it and immediately knew it was going where I wanted, near top corner leaving the keeper no chance. The game ended 4-1 to them but I did my part when I came on and got a goal for it.
The next few games I played well and did my part in all. This lead to a call up into the second year team which is a higher level. Came on at half time in the second year game and played the best I have since I’ve been here. Creating loads of chances and making tackles everywhere possible. I made a great play with my team mate who is also from the Caribbean then I slipped the ball through with my weaker foot right into our strikers path who scored his second of the game. We won 4-1. Since then I have played two other times with the second year teams doing well in one and doing okay in the other.
We also train on Mondays at Cobham training ground, which is Chelsea FC’s training ground. We play on immaculate pitches in amazing facilities at Cobham and often see the U-18 Academy and other age groups training. Even some of the first team on one occasion. I am in a great place to improve my football and hopefully become professional.
I would like to thank everyone back home for support and helping me be here! It means so much to me!
