Stars Register 1st Win
On Saturday afternoon at FCIB Sports Ground the KickStart Stars played their first home match of the BFA Division 2 season and came out as convincing 1-0 winners over neighbours Pro Shottas, taking them to the top of the Lambert Thomas Zone (pending scores from other matches).
After early morning showers the weather cleared up to provide perfect playing conditions and the Stars looked comfortable at home playing in front of their home fans, who spurred them on from the 1st kick to the final whistle. A solid defensive performance by the back four of Naphtali Cave, Tim Maynard, Elector Pearson Jr. and debutant Ian Marquez kept the Pro Shottas front line at bay, thereby providing goalkeeper Zico Callendar with very little to do. Player/coach Kent Hall had a masterful performance in midfield and was unlucky not to score on two occasions in the first half when he first bent a free kick around the wall, only to be denied by Pro Shottas goalkeeper Sean Field, and later struck the bar with a fierce drive from outside the box. Combining with Gregg Mandeville and Kwame White, the Stars midfield bossed the game, especially the second half, and produced a number of opportunities for wingers Rayn Phillips and Stuart Hall and centre forward Zaquan Ishmael. Seemingly unable to find the breakthrough however, Jabari Brandford was introduced for White and Stuart Hall was pushed up top alongside Ishmael, as the team changed from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 formation. With about ten minutes to go the pressure finally told as the Stars were awarded a penalty for hand ball, which Brandford placed firmly into the bottom left corner of the net. With both light and energy levels fading, the Stars defended staunchly to hang on to their lead.
The Stars’ next match is tomorrow night (Tuesday) at Westbury Primary School at 7:00pm vs Oxley, closely followed by another away match on Thursday night at the Glebe vs BDF.
